Being able to equip a gem does not mean it helps your build. Start by understanding how your main skill deals damage.

01. Define Your Main Skill’s Role

Does your damage come from attacks, spells, damage over time or minions? Check that your chosen supports affect that behaviour.

Read each support’s allowed skills and exceptions. Do not judge compatibility by similar names or gem colour alone.

Make sure your main skill and its supports have the required links. Recheck the setup after replacing equipment.

Test a sustained fight after adding a support. If higher damage also leaves you repeatedly out of mana, solve the sustain problem first.

Check level and attribute requirements. If changing gear disables a gem, restore the missing requirement before assuming the setup still works.

Judge upgrades through clearing, boss combat and resource use, rather than displayed damage alone.

(In 3.29, gems can enter equipment sockets of other colours. Matching red, green or blue sockets grant +10% gem quality; links still matter.)
